Round carpets are relatively rare and often comes with a medallion. The oldest round carpet found today is a Mamluk-carpet from 16th century made in Egypt. This carpet has complex geometrical motifs with large medallions.
In France, round carpets were manufactured mainly with Aubusson- and Savonnerie styles in the 19th and 20th century. In China round carpets were seen for the first time in Tientsin and in Beijing in the middle of the 20th century and today there is a wide supply of both new and older carpets.
Round carpets have become more popular and nowadays these are made mainly in the cities of Tabriz and Isfahan in Iran.
Oval carpets are very rare and there are no standardized sizes on these. They are measured the same way as rectangular carpets.
